Tweed Shire Council has once again won the Employer of Choice award from the Local Government Engineers' Association (LGEA) and Vision Super.
The award acknowledges Council staff's dedication to creating a safe, inclusive and future-focused workplace. This is the second time Tweed Shire Council has received the Employer of Choice title, following its first win in 2021.
Tweed Shire Council General Manager, Troy Green, said the award reflects Council's strong focus on setting benchmarks for the local government sector.
"As one of the region's largest employers, we have a responsibility to lead by example and strive for improvements so we have a workforce that can serve our community better tomorrow than we can today.
"This recognition shows our commitment to building a workplace culture that values respect, safety and innovation," Mr Green said.
Council's People and Culture team and Engineering Division, in partnership with other Council teams, have done an outstanding job delivering initiatives that strengthen how we work, collaborate and grow.
Key achievements recognised by the LGEA include:
- A Civil Liability Allowance review that set a new benchmark for how engineering and technical roles are recognised. The framework developed by Council was praised by Local Government NSW and has set the standard for other councils.
- Council's strong focus on retaining highly skilled engineering and technical roles in-house and a concerted effort to try to keep those filled.
- The launch of the Women in Water traineeship program, opening new pathways for women in technical fields.
- Delivery of psychosocial safety training to more than 700 staff, supported by the 'Part of your everyday' campaign, to strengthen respect and cultural safety across the organisation.
- Ongoing investment in career pathways, from cadetships and graduate placements to mentoring and professional development programs.
- Supporting flexible work options, ensuring staff can balance personal and professional commitments while continuing to deliver great outcomes for our community.
The whole community benefits from these initiatives as we continue to build a strong workforce pipeline. Our work in this space is not completed yet as we strive to improve every day.
The LGEA/Vision Super Employer of Choice Award celebrates councils that demonstrate excellence in employment practices, professional development, diversity and engagement across NSW.
