Two arrested following railway equipment theft

Police have arrested two men today following the theft and criminal damage of signal equipment at Altona North yesterday, Victoria Police say.

It is alleged that two males forced entry to a signal box, stealing signal switches and transformers valued in excess of $16,000.

The incident caused major disruptions to train services on the Werribee line.

A 38-year-old Hoppers Crossing man and a 31-year-old Werribee man were arrested about 1am attempting to steal more equipment in Altona North.

Both men are currently assisting police with their enquiries and are expected to be charged with theft, criminal damage and trespass offences.

Police are appealing for anyone who saw a silver Holden Commodore station wagon with a trailer attached loitering in the Altona North area on the 22nd or 23rd of June.
