Two Charged With Speeding, Racing at Lake Illawarra

Two men have been charged with street racing and speeding offences, and another man issued with a speeding infringement, after allegedly being detected riding their motorbikes at more than 150km/h in the Illawarra at the weekend.

About 9pm Sunday (21 June 2026), officers attached to Wollongong Highway Patrol were conducting mobile patrols on Five Islands Road, Cringila, about 6km south of Wollongong, when they detected four motorcyclists allegedly speeding across three lanes of traffic.

Officers will allege the motorcyclists accelerated, reaching speeds of up to 157km/h in a 80km/h signposted zone.

A short time later, three motorcyclists stopped at the traffic lights at the intersection of Lake Avenue and Springhill Road, Cringila, where police arrested two men, aged 19 and 22.

Checks revealed the teen was a learner-rider.

The younger man was charged with organise, promote etc race between vehicles and learner exceed speed greater than 45km/h.

The older man was charged with organise, promote etc race between vehicles, and Class A motor vehicle exceed speed greater than 45km/h.

Both rider's licences were suspended for three months and the younger rider's bike number plates were also seized.

Both men will appear in Wollongong Local Court on Tuesday 4 August 2026

The third rider, a man aged 50, was issued with a traffic infringement notice for class A motor vehicle exceed speed greater than 45km/h.

Inquiries are continuing to locate the fourth rider who turned left on Lake Avenue shortly before the arrests.
