Emergency services remain on scene after two people died when a car left the road and struck a tree on the state's far north coast today.
About 6pm (Monday 4 May 2026), emergency services were called to the M1 Motorway near Chinderah Road, Chinderah, after reports of a crash.
Officers from Tweed-Byron Police District arrived to find that both the driver and the front-seat passenger had died at the scene after the vehicle crashed into a tree.
A crime scene has been established and an investigation by specialist officers attached to the Crash Investigation Unit has commenced.
Two southbound lanes remain closed.
