Two in custody after Polair tracks car to Berkeley

A man and a woman remain in police custody after being arrested in Berkeley this morning

About 9.30am (Thursday April 29), officers from Lake Illawarra Police District attempted to stop a sedan heading south on New Lake Entrance Road at Shellharbour.

The driver failed to stop, and police began to follow the vehicle with the Police Airwing, Polair, called to assist.

Polair monitored the car as it travelled more than 20km north on the Princes Motorway, allegedly crossing onto the wrong side of the road multiple times before hitting two police vehicles at a shopping centre on Crown Street, Wollongong.

The car continued to be tracked as it travelled south, eventually stopping in Cormorant Street, Berkeley, where the two occupants fled on foot.

A man and a woman, believed to be in their 20s, were arrested a short time later and have been taken to Lake Illawarra Police Station. There was no police pursuit due to Polair's involvement.

Inquiries are continuing.
