Across Victoria, more than 736,600 unpaid carers give their time and effort to look after a partner, family member or friend who needs them. Every carer is different, and they come from all cultures, religions and all ages. Carers provide essential, unpaid support in a range of ways, from a few hours a day to around-the-clock assistance and care.
It can be difficult for carers to access the supports and services they need to look after themselves, and make sure they're supported in their care role - particularly when many don't see themselves as carers.
Through two funding opportunities for eligible organisations, carers will receive increased access to respite and tailored support to pursue their employment or vocational training goals.
Eligible carer support organisations and peak bodies, health services, councils, neighbourhood houses, service providers, employment transition support organisations and other community organisations are encouraged to express their interest in these funding opportunities. Partnerships between organisations are strongly encouraged, particularly to improve service accessibility to rural and regional communities and carers from diverse backgrounds.
Additional Carer respite funding
When you are caring for others, it's important to take care of yourself as well. For thousands of Victorians, providing care is a 24/7 job. Respite helps give carers a break and a chance to relax or take part in other activities, including social activities, study or paid employment.
The reach and equity of respite support across the state will be boosted by more than $10 million in addition to recurrent funding for respite through the Victorian Government's Support for Carer Program.
Through this funding for organisations, carers will be able to access a range of home, community and facility respite options, as well as opportunities for carers and those they care for to take part in enjoyable and recreational programs and activities and programs that help them look after their own health and wellbeing. The funding will particularly focus on encouraging innovation and increasing access to respite support for carers and communities currently experiencing barriers to respite access, such as those in rural areas.
