UK Calls Urgent Debate on Israel's Qatar Aggression

UK Gov

UK Statement for the Urgent Debate to discuss the recent military aggression launched by Israel against the State of Qatar. Delivered by the UK's Permanent Representative to the WTO and UN, Kumar Iyer.

Thank you, Mr President.

We wholly condemn Israel's strikes on Doha, we stand in full and unwavering solidarity with Qatar and extend our condolences for the Qatari personnel tragically killed and injured.

As the High Commissioner stressed last week, such action poses a serious risk to mediation efforts in Gaza and risks further escalation in the region.

The UK firmly supports the efforts of Qatar, the US and Egypt to achieve a ceasefire in Gaza, to secure the release of the hostages and to end this conflict. We urge all parties to re-engage meaningfully to reach a negotiated deal.

Mr President, the conflict in Gaza continues to have a devastating impact. The hostages have endured unimaginable suffering for almost two years. Palestinian civilians face repeated displacement, death and injury. And it is abhorrent that famine is unfolding in parts of Gaza City.

We reiterate our unequivocal condemnation of Hamas, and the atrocities committed on October 7th. Hamas must release all the hostages and can play no part in the future governance of Gaza.

However, the strikes on Qatar are unacceptable and will do nothing to deliver peace in the Middle East, or to safeguard Israel's long-term security.

A political solution is the only way to achieve lasting peace and security for Palestinians and Israelis alike.
