UN Detention Experts to Visit Australia

GENEVA - The UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention will conduct an official visit to Australia, from 1 to 12 December 2025, to assess the situation regarding deprivation of liberty in the country.

The delegation - comprising two members of the group, Ganna Yudkivska and Matthew Gillett - will visit the Australian Capital Territory, New South Wales, the Northern Territory and Western Australia. They will meet Government officials, independent oversight bodies, civil society groups and other relevant stakeholders during the visit.

The experts will also gather information from places where people are deprived of their liberty, including prisons, police stations and institutions for juveniles, migrants and people with psychosocial disabilities.

The Working Group will share its preliminary observations at a press conference on 12 December 2025 at 1pm local time, at the Rydges Australia Square, 97-99 Pitt Street, Sydney NSW 2000. The Working Group will present its final report on the visit to the UN Human Rights Council in September 2026.
