UN Human Rights Council 49 UK statement for interactive dialogue with independent expert on Mali

The UK thanks the Independent Expert for his report.

We are deeply concerned by the deteriorating situation in Mali. We have noted recent reports of a surge in human rights violations and abuses, including by members of the Malian armed forces. The Malian authorities must ensure that all perpetrators are held accountable. We also call on the authorities to commit to holding elections as soon as possible.

We echo the Independent Expert's concern for women and girls in Mali. We will continue to support all efforts to end sexual and gender-based violence, ensure the safe access to education for girls, support sexual and reproductive health and rights, and empower women in political and peace-building processes.

The International Community has warned about the damaging presence of Wagner Group mercenaries in Mali. Wagner Group cannot provide the long-term stability that the Malian authorities seek, and their track record of committing human rights abuses speaks for itself. We note the report of the Independent Expert does not mention Wagner Group's presence in Mali - we hope that his next report will rectify this.

Mr Tine,

What impact will Wagner Group's presence have on the long term security and stability of Mali, and how can we best hold perpetrators of abuses to account?

Thank you.
