UN Report: Arab Region Faces Growing Food Insecurity Amid Global Crises

An estimated 53.9 million people suffered from severe food insecurity in the Arab region in 2021 - a 55% increase since 2010. This is one of the key findings of the 2022 "Near East and North Africa Regional Overview of Food Security and Nutrition: Trade as an Enabler for Food Security and Nutrition", a report which analyzes food security in the region and provides recommendations to mitigate risks of food insecurity.

The report, released by FAO, IFAD, WFP, WHO, UNICEF and ESCWA, discusses how international trade can enhance food security and nutrition in a region marred by political instability and still reeling from the COVID-19 pandemic.

It also suggests ways Arab countries can develop agrifood systems to improve food security, and achieve economic and environmental sustainability.
