Undergrounding Power to commence in schools

Darwins undergrounding powerlines program will re-commence this dry season with schools the first cab off the rank.

All nine Darwin schools that dont currently have underground powerlines will have their lines put underground over a two year period.

This will see almost every suburb that has above ground lines receive a benefit from the re-started program.

The schools are:

Alawa Primary School

Jingili Primary School

Parap Primary School

Larrakeyah Primary School

Moil Primary School

Nemarluk School

St Johns College

Stuart Park Primary School

Wagaman Primary School

During severe weather occurrences this work will help schools avoid losing power and enable them to remain open and provide safe environments for kids whilst recovery efforts occur.

It is expected to cost around $3 million.

The timing for undergrounding of powerlines to suburban streets is being worked through.

Quotes to attribute to Treasurer Nicole Manison:

The Territory Labor Government is recommencing the undergrounding power program following its scrapping in 2012 by the chaotic CLP government.

Commencing this mid-year, nine Darwin schools will be the first to receive works.

The rollout will create on-going local jobs, ensure more reliable power to our suburbs and enable fast recovery efforts during severe weather occurrences.
