Unearthing Regions History

Step back in time and explore the rich history of the Tamworth region with Tamworth Regional Gallery's latest exhibition, Unearthed.

Unearthed takes a look at objects from across the collections of 12 museums, archives, galleries and centres throughout the region which are recent acquisitions, unknown stories or can share different perspectives.

The Tamworth Powerstation Museum, Australian Country Music Hall of Fame, Moonbi Museum, Tamworth Historical Society, Tamworth Regional Film and Sound Archive, Tamworth Regional Astronomy and Science Centre, Manilla Heritage Museum, Gil Bennet Collection, Chris Bowman Collection, Tamworth Family History Group, Tamworth Regional Gallery and Tamworth Nursing, Hospital and Medical Museum will each contribute one piece from their collection to be displayed.

Some of the pieces visitors can expect to see include country music literary pioneer, Ian Hands' LC Smith typewriter, which was used to write the Country Music Roundup newsletter, precious Gems and Metals from the Gil Bennet and Chris Bowman Collections and a Renboy branding tool from the early 1900s.

On Wednesday 7 May at 2pm representatives from each of the 12 collections will be providing a guided tour of the exhibition, offering deeper context to each item on display.

Tamworth Regional Council Museums Operations Coordinator, Naomi Blakey, said it's a wonderful chance for the Tamworth Regional Museums to celebrate their combined history through the telling of local stories.

"It's an incredible opportunity for the historical communities in our region to come together, engage with the past, reflect on the stories of those who came before us, and appreciate the heritage that continues to influence our community today, she said."

The exhibition is free to enter and is part of the wider 2025 Tamworth Regional Heritage Festival which takes place from Saturday 26 April – 18 May. Unearthed will be on display in Tamworth Regional Gallery from Saturday 19 April until Sunday 18 May, 2025.
