UNESCO Chief Denounces Halima Idris Salim's Murder in Sudan

Audrey Azoulay, Director-General of UNESCO, has condemned the killing of journalist Halima Idris Salim in Sudan on 10 October 2023.

I condemn the killing of Halima Idris Salim. I call on all parties to ensure the safety of journalists working to inform populations about the conflict. The perpetrators of this crime must be identified and prosecuted.

Halima Idris Salim was a reporter for the online news outlet Sudan Bukra. She was killed on 10 October when she was run over by a vehicle while she was reporting in the street in Omdurman, northwest of the capital Khartoum.

UNESCO promotes the safety of journalists through global awareness-raising, capacity building and by coordinating the implementation of the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity.
