UNESCO Chief Denounces Murder of Jesús Gutiérrez Vergara

Audrey Azoulay, Director-General of UNESCO, has condemned the killing of Jesús Gutiérrez Vergara in Sonora, Mexico on 24 September 2023.

I condemn the killing of Jesús Gutiérrez Vergara. I call upon the authorities to undertake an investigation to determine whether this killing is related to his journalistic activity. Violence against journalists is an attack on democracy and action must be taken to fight impunity for such crimes.

Jesús Gutiérrez Vergara was a journalist and managed the Notiface online news platform, where he covered police news in the San Luis Colorado area. He was killed outside his home in an attack that also killed one police officer and wounded three others. He is the sixth Mexican journalist killed this year.

UNESCO promotes the safety of journalists through global awareness-raising, capacity building and by coordinating the implementation of the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity.
