UNESCO Chief Denounces Somali Journalist's Murder

Audrey Azoulay, Director-General of UNESCO, has condemned the killing of journalist Abdikarin Ahmed Bulhan in the Abudwak district, Galmudug region in Somalia on 13 March 2024.

I condemn the killing of Abdikarin Ahmed Bulhan. I call on the authorities to investigate the circumstances and motive of this killing and prosecute those responsible. Journalists play a vital role in informing populations and must never the target of such violence

Abdikarin Ahmed Bulhan was a renowned reporter and worked at the Somali National Television station. He was also known for his humanitarian and peace activism work in Abudwaq and across Galmudug State in Somalia. He was reportedly shot and killed at his workplace.

UNESCO promotes the safety of journalists through global awareness-raising, capacity building and by coordinating the implementation of the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity.
