UNESCO Chief Mourns Death of Saed al-Halabi in Palestine

Audrey Azoulay, Director-General of UNESCO, has deplored the death of Saed al-Halabi in Palestine on 25 October 2023.

I deplore the death of Saed al-Halabi. I reiterate my call for the respect of the UN Security Council Resolution 2222/2015 on the protection of journalists, media professionals and associated personnel as civilians in situations of conflict and call for a full, independent investigation into the circumstances of his death.

Saed al-Halabi was a journalist for Al-Aqsa TV. He was killed in his home following an airstrike in the Jabalia refugee camp in the north of the Gaza Strip on 25 October.

UNESCO promotes the safety of journalists through global awareness-raising, capacity building and by coordinating the implementation of the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity.
