University Of Sydney Launches For Good Campaign

The University of Sydney has launched its most ambitious Campaign to date - 'For good: the Campaign for Sydney' inviting alumni, donors and partners around the world to join a bold movement to create lasting impact for generations to come.

Building on a 175-year legacy of service and innovation, the Campaign sets out a clear vision: to unite the University's global community to tackle society's most urgent challenges - from accelerating medical breakthroughs to addressing climate change, enriching civic life and expanding access to education.

Chancellor David Thodey AO said the Campaign was about unlocking the University's full potential to serve society.

"The University of Sydney has always stood for the power of education and research to improve lives," Mr Thodey said. "Through this Campaign, we are deepening our commitment to solving the most pressing issues of our time, and doing so with integrity, ambition and humility."

For good: the Campaign for Sydney, will run through to 2032 and aligns with the University's long-term strategic goals. The Campaign builds on early momentum, with support already helping to establish flagship initiatives such as the Khuda Women in STEM Program, the Snow Vision Accelerator, and a new Centre for Transition Technologies. The Campaign also aims to engage more than 300,000 alumni worldwide, connecting them to the University and each other through shared time, expertise and talent.

Vice-Chancellor and President, Professor Mark Scott AO, said the Campaign was about bringing the University's strengths together with the passion and generosity of its community.

"We are a university for the city, the country and the world - a conduit that allows our people to shape the future for all," Professor Scott said.

"At a time of rapid global change and uncertainty, we believe universities have a responsibility not just to imagine a better future, but to help build it. This Campaign is a call to action to our community: to lead, to collaborate, and to serve - for good."

Key priorities

The Campaign will focus on four key areas:

  • fast tracking medical research to improve health outcomes
  • bringing people together to spark ideas and create positive change
  • protecting the planet through cutting edge food and environmental research
  • supporting learning for everyone, at every stage of life.

These priorities reflect the University's multidisciplinary strengths and its unique capacity to bring together diverse expertise to solve complex problems.

Campaign Patron Belinda Hutchinson AC, alum and former Chancellor of the University, said the initiative was deeply personal.

"The University of Sydney changed the course of my life and through this Campaign I hope it can do the same for countless others," Ms Hutchinson said.

"This is about breaking down barriers, creating opportunity and investing in a future where brilliance is not limited by background. I'm honoured to be part of a campaign that reflects the University's values and vision for positive change."

Vice-Principal (Advancement) Rosalind Ogilvie said the Campaign was grounded in collaboration.

"Philanthropy is a powerful enabler - it allows us to think bigger, act faster and reach further," Ms Ogilvie said.

"But what makes this Campaign truly exciting is the sense of collective purpose. Our donors, alumni, researchers and students are all part of a movement to lead for good - and we're only just getting started."
