The University of Melbourne is proud to support the Yoorrook Walk for Truth which gets underway this Sunday 25 May and ends on 18 June.
The Walk for Truth, the first of its kind in Victoria, is an initiative of Commissioner Travis Lovett, Deputy Chair of the Yoorrook Justice Commission.
Over the past four years Yoorrook has heard powerful truths from people across the state, giving evidence on the impacts of colonisation. In April, Commissioner Lovett visited the University to learn more about the University's own Truth-Telling and Justice Project.
Commissioner Lovett is walking 400 kilometres from Portland, the first site of settlement in Victoria, to Parliament House where the Commission's recommendations will be formally handed to the State Government.
A number of University of Melbourne staff, including Professor Barry Judd, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Indigenous) will join Commissioner Lovett on the Walk for Truth. The University will also host Commissioner Lovett when he reaches the Werribee campus on 15 June.
Professor Judd said the Yoorrook Walk for Truth provides an opportunity to reaffirm the University's commitment to truth telling.
"I commend Commissioner Lovett for taking on this challenge to bring to light the truths of First Nations people across Victoria. I look forward to joining him on the Walk to demonstrate the University Melbourne's commitment to truth telling, in order to make the University a more welcoming environment for everyone," Professor Judd said.
