Unlawful use of a motor vehicle at Gold Coast

Five teenagers were allegedly involved in the stealing of a Hummer and driving dangerously on the Gold Coast last night.

Around 9.30pm, a Hummer H3 was allegedly driven from a carpark, narrowly missing a pedestrian as it turned onto the Gold Coast Highway at Mermaid Waters.

The car was later seen at the intersection of Stamford Drive and Christine Avenue at Varisty Lakes where it was allegedly driving dangerously and hit a parked car.

The car then drove along Cumberland Drive where it allegedly crashed into another parked car and clipped another car driving in the opposite direction.

No one was physically injured.

The Hummer was later abandoned on Frascott Avenue where it was allegedly set on fire causing minor damage to the driver's seat.

PolAir and the Dog Squad tracked the five teenagers and they were arrested at the rear yard of a property on South Lake Drive.

A 17-year-old boy became aggressive towards police and allegedly spat on officers.

He has been charged with serious assault of a police officer, burglary, unlawful use of a motor vehicle and arson. He was denied police bail and is due to appear in Southport Childrens Court.

Another 17-year-old boy has also been charged with unlawful use of a motor vehicle, attempted arson and burglary. He was also denied police bail and due to appear in Southport Childrens Court.

Investigations are continuing into the involvement of the three other boys.

It will be alleged the vehicle was stolen from a residence on Verdichio Avenue at Mermaid Waters earlier that evening.
