Today we have come together across the public health sector to publish an open letter to all Australians.
Australia has some of the lowest smoking rates in the world. This hard-won progress is again under threat from big tobacco and their proposals to reduce the cost of tobacco, clearing a pathway for more Australians to become addicted to nicotine.
To sustain our success in tobacco control, we must:
- Enforce strict transparency and uphold protections against tobacco industry interference
- Maintain proven policies, including tobacco taxation, advertising restrictions, and public education campaigns
- Strengthen action on illicit tobacco not by lowering prices but through enforcement and by assisting people to quit smoking altogether
- Expose industry tactics and hold decision makers accountable.
As we approach World No Tobacco Day, we're 'Unmasking Big Tobacco' and calling for transparency, accountability and stronger protections against tobacco-industry influence, to help protect Australians from the harms of tobacco.
