The Eastern Freeway will be closed in both directions between Doncaster and Middleborough roads from 10pm, Wednesday 7 January until 5am, Monday 12 January 2026, and significant travel delays are expected.
These works, as part of the North East Link Project, will enable the relocation of underground power services to provide space to build new freeway lanes and the new Eram Road walking and cycling bridge.
During this time, the existing Doncaster Road bridge will also be demolished to allow construction of the new bridge on the Ringwood side of the Doncaster Road interchange.
In addition, from Monday 12 January, the Doncaster Road citybound exit ramp will be closed to allow construction of a temporary ramp, which will open to traffic in late January 2026.
What's expected
- Significant travel delays of up to 90 minutes are expected during the closure.
- Motorists are advised to plan ahead, allow extra travel time, and avoid the area where possible.
- The closure will also impact the broader road network, with increased traffic expected on Doncaster Road, Tram Road, Manningham Road and Middleborough Road.
- Moderate to high levels of noise and vibration during 24-hour works.
