Update on closure of Chaudiere Crossing due to high water flow

From: Public Services and Procurement Canada

Media advisory

For immediate release

Gatineau, Quebec, May 1, 2019 - Public Services and Procurement Canada (PSPC) wishes to advise the public that the Chaudiere Crossing remains closed until further notice. At this time, the water is very turbulent and has been steadily rising. However, it remains below the bridge, with only intermittent waves splashing against the structure. The bridge is visually inspected (except for the underside) twice daily by PSPC bridge engineers and twice daily by surveyors to monitor for any sign of bridge movement. To date, there have been no indications of bridge movement.

The rising water has limited our ability to inspect the structure's underside, but once the water recedes, a detailed inspection of the bridge will need to be completed before it can be deemed safe and reopened for use.
