Visitors to Walls of Jerusalem National Park will benefit from upgrades to walking tracks, campsites and amenities with stage 2 works scheduled to get underway in October 2021.
These works are part of a four-year project to deliver improved facilities for visitors exploring the popular park, while protecting the Outstanding Universal Values.
Construction works will include walking track upgrades within Jaffa Vale, between Dixons Kingdom and Lake Ball and an upgraded campsite at Dixons Kingdom (with an additional 12 double tent platforms and cooking platform).
These works are valued at $1.551 million and are jointly funded by the Tasmanian Government ($586,000) and the Australian Government ($965,000) through the COVID-19 Relief and Recovery Fund to support World and National Heritage Places.
Minister for the Environment Sussan Ley said the upgrades to the National Park are part of the $33.5 million COVID-19 Relief and Recovery package to support heritage infrastructure projects.
"Tasmanian residents are encouraged to head outdoors to explore this naturally beautiful area, with interstate visitors to hopefully follow once health advice and restrictions permit," Minister Ley said.
"This is one of 33 projects to be completed around the country over the next six to 18 months, ranging from $40,000 to $4.9 million, which will provide immediate economic stimulus and new opportunities in all states and territories, as well as on Norfolk Island."
Tasmanian Minister for Parks Jacquie Petrusma said the upgrades would benefit the overall look and feel of the treasured National Park.
"Once complete, these upgrades will not only improve the visitor experience but will also reduce impacts on sensitive mature Pencil Pine, highland grass communities and the heritage listed Dixons Kingdom Hut," Minister Petrusma said.
"The Walls of Jerusalem National Park is a unique Tasmanian location with impressive alpine features, highland lakes, mountains and Pencil Pine forests and it is exciting to see further developments occurring within the park."
Works are expected to be complete by May 2022.
Prefabrication of new toilet facilities at Dixons Kingdom and Lake Adelaide has also begun. The tender for these works was awarded last financial year.
