US Defense Sec. Austin Holds Call With Polish Defense Minister

Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III conducted an introductory call Dec. 20 with his Polish counterpart, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defence Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, to congratulate him on his appointment and affirm the strong U.S.-Poland bilateral defense relationship.

Minister Kosiniak-Kamysz discussed the Polish government's commitment to accelerate modernization of their military capabilities, delivering critical contributions to strengthen NATO's eastern flank. Secretary Austin thanked him for hosting U.S. forces and for Poland's commitment to readiness, and praised Poland's continued support for Ukraine.

Both leaders discussed the importance of the Red Sea as a vital artery for global commerce. Secretary Austin thanked Poland for its support to the 44-nation joint statement condemning the Houthis' illegal attacks on international shipping. Minister Kosiniak-Kamysz expressed appreciation for U.S. leadership confronting global security challenges.

The leaders pledged to remain in close contact.
