Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III spoke today with His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan of the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

The Secretary expressed sadness over the recent passing of the late President of the United Arab Emirates, His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed al Nahyan and extended condolences to the family of the President and the people of the United Arab Emirates.

The two leaders reflected on the legacy of His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed al Nahyan as a visionary leader for the UAE, the region, and the world. The Secretary described the late President as a steadfast friend and partner to the United States and expressed gratitude for his contributions to regional stability and security.

The Secretary congratulated His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan on assuming the role of President of the UAE. The Secretary expressed that he looks forward to strengthening the important defense partnership that expanded under His Highness Sheikh Khalifa's presidency, and to deepening close ties between the United States and the UAE.
