Do you know what our top green bin contaminant is?
It's not the wrong food scraps – it's plastic bags and the wrong caddy liners.
Even one plastic bag can contaminate a whole load of food and garden waste, stopping it from becoming compost for parks and community gardens.
The good news? It's an easy fix.
Lime green and certified
Only lime green, AS4736‑certified compostable liners are accepted in your green bin.
When you shop, look for the exact seedling logo (below). You can also save time and purchase the right liners with confidence from Council facilities.

Council facilities that sell certified compostable liners
Monash residents can purchase a 75-pack roll of certified compostable liners for $8.25* at the following Council facilities:
- Monash Civic Centre
- Oakleigh Service Centre
- Monash Public Library branches
- Monash Recycling and Waste Centre.
Please call ahead of visiting to check our facilities have stock. While we make every effort to ensure each location has a supply, we cannot always guarantee rolls are available.
Council also offers Monash residents a rebate on packs of certified compostable food waste liners through Compost Community. One rebate is available per household, per annum.
You can also buy liners online, at supermarkets or from retailers. Make sure to check they're lime green liners labelled 'compostable' and feature the certified seedling logo.
*Price current as of 13 March 2026. Prices subject to change every 1 July.
Misleading labels
Many bin liners will have labels like biodegradable, eco or green. But without the seedling logo, they're not accepted.
You can also go liner‑free or wrap food scraps in plain paper towel or newspaper.
Greening our city with our green bins
Everything in our green bins is recycled into compost that can be used in our Monash parks and community gardens.
That's why it's so important to only put food scraps and garden clippings in your green bin.
