Students at Coolnwynpin State School have had a disrupted first day back after their school was damaged by vandals over the weekend, Queensland Police say.
School staff, builders and cleaners worked hard on Monday to ensure all students were able to safely return for the start of term 4.
Officers from the Wynnum Child Protection and Investigation Unit believe the school on Telaska Court in Capalaba was broken into between 6pm on Friday and 4pm on Sunday.
Initial investigations suggest a number of people have entered the Before and After School Care building and thrown food around the room including milk, custard and eggs.
Paint has then been poured over tables, printers, furniture, walls and ceiling inside the building as well as over the exterior walls.
Taps have also been turned on inside causing the room to flood.
The damage is so significant extensive repairs will need to be completed before it can be used again. Alternative arrangements have been made for Before and After Care students.
Three other school buildings had windows damaged and broken, and two IPads and a phone have also been stolen from the premises.
It is estimated that at least $40,000 worth of damage has been done to the school.
A forensic examination of the facility has been completed and police have located a number of fingerprints.
