Hume City Council welcomes the outcome of a recent decision by the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) regarding activity on Canterbury Avenue in Sunbury.
We've been investigating concerns raised about this site for some time. Based on what we found, we asked VCAT to step in.
We're happy that they've now ordered that the activity at 370 Riddell Road must cease immediately.
This should give some comfort to the residents as it will mean an immediate stop of trucks in the area affected immediately.
Moving forward, the VCAT orders state that the (land) requires permits before any new works can be undertaken. However, applying for permits does not mean these works will simply begin again. Any permits approved by Council will come with stringent conditions.
No works can start until these plans are approved by Council. If works commence on the land without approval the matter will return to VCAT.
Council will continue to keep a close eye on the site and take further action if needed.
We want to reassure our community that we're committed to protecting the safety and wellbeing of Canterbury Avenue residents.
Quotes attributable to Hume City Mayor, Councillor Jarrod Bell:
"Today's VCAT decision is a win for the community in Canterbury Hills Estate, and I want to thank them for their unwavering advocacy as we fought for an outcome that would stop this brazen misuse of Canterbury Avenue.
I also want to thank Council staff, who patiently and diligently collected evidence and did everything in their legal powers to find a resolution for our community.
We have been with you in this fight, and we thank you for your patience in making sure we could 'stop the trucks' legally and with reassurances for future activity."
