Police in Alice Springs have issued a stern warning to drivers: hooning will not be tolerated.
Police have seized two vehicles this week.
On 21 August, Police attempted to stop the driver of a Holden Commodore on Fogarty Street in Alice Springs, for random alcohol and drug testing. The driver failed to stop for Police and conducted a burn-out when driving off. The vehicle was located the following day and was seized for 48 hours under anti-hooning legislation. Enquiries to locate the driver of the vehicle are continuing.
On 22 August, Police stopped the driver of a Holden Commodore utility on Burke Street in Alice Springs, for random alcohol and drug testing. The driver, a 32-year-old male, returned a positive roadside drug test and was advised he was under arrest for secondary testing. As Police were about to get the driver out of the vehicle, the driver accelerated heavily, conducted a burn-out and drove off from the location at high speed.
Around an hour later, Police located and arrested the driver of the vehicle. He was later charged with:
- Escaping lawful custody
- Failing to supply a saliva sample for drug testing
- Drive cause loss of traction / damage to road surface
- Driving a vehicle in a dangerous manner
The driver was bailed to appear at a later date.
Acting Senior Sergeant Conan Robertson said, "Police would like to remind people that driving on our roads is a privilege and a responsibility.
"We will continue to target people who put other road users at risk and are not driving responsibly. Police will be out and about conducting random alcohol and drug testing and targeting anti-social driving practices and other traffic offences."
