Victoria Bolsters Global Ties, Economic Future

Victorian Opposition Leader Brad Battin has concluded his first visit to China, where he engaged with key stakeholders to strengthen relationships, promote Victoria's interests abroad and explore new opportunities to grow the state's economy.

The visit included stops in Shanghai, Shenzhen, Guangzhou and Suzhou, with meetings across government, business and industry.

Mr Battin also attended the Canton Fair and the China International Import Expo (CIIE), and toured advanced infrastructure and energy projects.

A highlight of the trip was a visit to the Nanshang Energy Ecological Precinct, a facility that converts waste into energy - producing enough power each day to supply 70,000 homes for a month.

The precinct also serves as a hub for environmental education and research, showcasing innovation in sustainable energy production.

Mr Battin and his delegation met numerous Chinese business leaders and professionals with strong personal ties to Melbourne, many of whom had studied at Victorian universities.

The Opposition Leader said this was a clear reflection of Victoria's world-class education system and its role in fostering long-term international connections.

The visit also included engagement with members of the Chinese community, recognising their ongoing contribution to Victoria's multicultural society and economic success.

On multiple occasions, business and education leaders raised concerns about Victoria's rising crime rates, noting that Melbourne's crime crisis has drawn international attention.

It's clear the issue is becoming a deterrent for potential investors and students, with safety concerns influencing decisions about where to study, work and do business.

Mr Battin said: "This is yet another example of why we must restore community safety and public confidence - it's essential to protecting Victoria's global reputation and economic future."

"This visit has been an invaluable opportunity to connect with business and community leaders, deepen our longstanding ties, and identify new ways to drive investment and innovation in Victoria.

"The scale and speed of development in China has been eye-opening. There are lessons we can take home to deliver projects more efficiently and support growth in our own economy.

"Technology like that at Nanshang could complement Australia's natural resources, including gas, and help us build a more reliable and efficient energy future.

"It was inspiring to see how many business leaders we met had lived, worked or studied in Melbourne - a sign of how respected our education system is around the world.

"The import and export opportunities for Victoria are immense. Strengthening our connections with China and the broader Asian market will help local businesses expand, create jobs and stimulate our economy.

"One thing we have heard consistently, is there are too many taxes and too much red tape stifling business, investment and opportunity in Victoria. Businesses are looking elsewhere because it's simply easier to operate in other states.

"A Liberal and Nationals Government will ensure Victoria is open for business - creating the right conditions for investment, innovation and prosperity for every Victorian.
