Campaspe Shire Council and Yorta Yorta Nation Aboriginal Corporation (YYNAC) are pleased to advise that the Victoria Park redevelopment is recommencing following extensive cultural heritage assessment work undertaken in partnership at the site.
Earlier this year, the discovery of ancestral remains led to an immediate pause in construction to allow for appropriate cultural heritage processes and assessments to be carried out. Throughout this period, Council and YYNAC worked closely together to ensure the site was managed respectfully and in accordance with all cultural heritage requirements.
The assessment process has informed the next stage of the project and enabled both parties to agree on a culturally appropriate pathway forward. As the project resumes, a YYNAC supervisor will remain on site to provide ongoing cultural oversight and ensure compliance throughout the construction process.
Council and YYNAC acknowledge that the pause in works created uncertainty for sporting clubs, user groups and the wider community. We thank all stakeholders for their patience and understanding while this important work was undertaken.
The project remains fully funded, with costs associated with the cultural heritage assessment process accommodated within existing project contingencies. Council has continued to work with funding partners and project stakeholders throughout the process and remains committed to delivering the redevelopment for the community.
Both organisations recognise the significance of the discoveries made at Victoria Park and the importance of protecting and respecting cultural heritage. The collaborative approach taken throughout this process demonstrates a shared commitment to balancing cultural heritage responsibilities with community infrastructure needs.
Campaspe Shire Council and YYNAC will continue working in partnership as the project progresses to ensure cultural heritage is appropriately managed and protected while delivering the upgraded facilities that will benefit generations to come.
