Statement from WA Police Force Commissioner Chris Dawson
The tragic deaths of four serving Victoria Police officers in Melbourne last night will have a profound impact upon law enforcement personnel across the world and right here in Western Australia.
These officers were doing their duty and protecting their community. They were policing a Melbourne highway when their lives were tragically and abruptly ended.
Today, we send our thoughts and condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of the four officers. The broader "blue family" – including officers in Western Australia Police Force – stand by all who are grieving in this time of great sadness. Western Australia Police Force grieves with them.
Every day, Western Australia police are actively performing their duties in the community, including on the State's roads and highways. Last night's tragedy is a sobering reminder to all frontline officers of the inherent risks of these public environments.
These duties have increased in recent weeks through the establishment of controlled checkpoints that have been established to stop the spread of COVID-19 in Western Australia.
To our officers, please stay safe when performing your duties in the community and know that you are supported at this challenging time.
I have conveyed our condolences to the Chief Commissioner of Victoria Police and will keep you informed.
