Victorian Bushfire Recovery Jumpstarts Economy

Department of Home Affairs

Joint media release with the Hon Jaclyn Symes MP

Bushfire-affected Victorians will receive new and upgraded facilities at the Tintaldra Recreation Reserve and new sporting and recreation facilities in Buchan as just two of the projects being delivered under the third and final round of the Local Community Projects Grants program.

The grants make $3.7 million available to 10 community organisations to deliver projects that support the recovery of the local economy, building a sense of community pride and connectedness.

The grants are joint-funded by the Federal and Victorian governments under the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA).

Federal Minister for Emergency Management, Murray Watt, said the funding arrangements are delivering community recovery projects.

"While a lot of the focus lately has been on floods, we know that there are still communities recovering from the fires, and we continue to stand alongside them," Minister Watt said.

"Recovery is community-led, and no one knows what communities need better than locals. Enabling bushfire affected communities to choose and deliver their own priorities is key to stimulating the economy, boosting industry and jobs, and supporting recovery across areas impacted by the fires."

Victorian Minister for Emergency Services Jaclyn Symes said the funding supports both large projects to boost business, jobs and industry across the region and smaller, local-level projects to benefit community recovery after the fires.

"Locals know best when it comes to what they need to recover and rebuild from disaster. We've always been guided by them when it comes to recovery and we'll continue to back affected communities through that journey for as long as it takes," said Minister Symes.

Other community organisations receiving funding include Alpine Health, Benambra Neighbourhood House, Corryong Sporting Complex, East Gippsland Rail Trail, Startup Shakeup Inc in the state's North East, Totally Renewable Yackandandah & Wilderness Workspace in Mallacoota.

Bushfire Recovery Victoria administers the Local Community Projects Grants program, funded under the $68.6 million Local Economic Recovery program, delivering local projects vital for community recovery in bushfire-affected regions.
