The Organization of American States (OAS) and the Government of Brazil signed an agreement on the privileges and immunities of the OAS Electoral Observation Mission (EOM) that will accompany the general elections scheduled for October 4, 2026, with a runoff, if necessary, to be held on October 25.
The agreement was signed at OAS headquarters in Washington, DC., by the Secretary General of the OAS, Albert R. Ramdin, and the Permanent Representative of Brazil to the OAS, Benoni Belli.
Ambassador Belli recognized "the importance and professionalism of the OAS Department of Electoral Cooperation and Observation" (DECO) and praised its work "on the ground observing, but also after the elections, providing all governments of the region with very valuable recommendations to improve the entire process; not only the electoral system itself or how elections are organized and voting takes place, but also the vote counting system."
Secretary General Ramdin said that Brazil has "one of the largest electorates in the hemisphere going to the polls-almost 160 million people. That is no small undertaking, and it requires a strong team on the ground."
Secretary General Albert R. Ramdin appointed former Chilean Senator and Foreign Minister and former OAS Secretary General, José Miguel Insulza, as Chief of Mission for the October elections.
Since 2018, the OAS has observed four electoral processes in Brazil. This will be the Organization's fifth Electoral Observation Mission in the country.
