Despite Victoria leading the nation in gender equality, women are still being disproportionately discriminated, harassed and abused at work. Everyone deserves a fair and safe workplace, and we all have a part to play in making it better which is why the Victorian Chamber of Commerce and Industry has created Lead the Change, as part of the Victorian Government's Safe Workplaces for Women Initiative.
Lead the Change is a free program that offers training tools to support business in creating inclusive and safe workplaces across hospitality, retail, manufacturing and construction. The program aims to help employers understand their legal obligations in protecting employees from harassment and psychological harm.
Gendered violence is not only a societal issue that brings detrimental impacts on the individual and community, but it also poses a complex and costly issue for business. The economic impact of gendered violence is an estimated $2 billion nationally therefore it is fundamental for employers to understand the responsibilities and obligations.
From February 2026 to May 2027, the Victorian Chamber is hosting free online and in-person training sessions across Victoria. These offer practical tools and training focusing on the prevention of gender-based violence in the workplace and welcomes individuals and organisations involved in the construction, hospitality, manufacturing and retail sectors.
Quotes to be attributed to Victorian Chamber of Commerce and Industry Chief Executive Sally Curtain:
"Gendered violence has no place in our society or workplaces.
"The Lead the Change program is a significant step in shaping Victoria's business landscape to be more inclusive, respectful and most importantly – safe. Real progress is driven by collaboration; it's making sure all workplaces understand the issue and have the appropriate tools for prevention and resolution.
"The Victorian Chamber is here to ensure employers understand their legal obligations while promoting best practice policies in prevention and education. We understand navigating legislation can be difficult, which is why we're making sure no employer or employee is left behind."
