The Victorian Greens have said that any package to support renters during the COVID-19 pandemic must also protect them from being saddled with debts that will leave them in dire situations after the pandemic.
With renters around the state losing their jobs and struggling to pay rent, food and bills, it is critical that any package announced by the Government to support those in need includes:
- A legislated eviction ban and no rent increases
- Renters not to be left with a massive debt at the end of the pandemic or with any black marks on their records
- A default of at least 25 per cent rent reduction for all renters who are facing financial difficulties
- A significant funding boost for Tenants Victoria and other tenants advice services
Leader of the Victorian Greens, Samantha Ratnam, said renters were among those hardest hit during the pandemic that it was critical for the Government to adequately protect and support them.
Despite pledges to provide support, Victorians have been left in limbo for weeks without any detail from the Andrews Government about how it will enshrine protection for renters in law.
Any land tax relief must only be accessible for landlords that have agreed to a rent reduction of more than 25 per cent and for those who rely on their rental income as their primary source of income.
As stated by Leader of the Victorian Greens, Samantha Ratnam MLC:
"Access to a safe home is a basic human right. But unless the Government immediately provides an adequate package for renters during COVID-19, many may find themselves without one.
"It is critical that the Government applies a rent reduction for all those experiencing financial hardship as a result of the pandemic, and ensures that no renter who is granted a reduction ends up being saddled with debt over the next several months.
"With rent relief packages being announced by states across the country, Victoria is well placed to offer support to renters that doesn't leave them in vulnerable negotiating positions or with the burden of responsibility when it comes to securing rent relief.
"It is important that we protect and support those hardest hit during this pandemic, and leave no-one behind."
