Visa holders need more income protection

Tasmanian Labor
  • Visa holders miss out on federal safety net payments
  • State government support welcome but will only go so far
  • Federal government must change JobKeeper eligibility
  • Tasmania's visa holders need immediate income support from the Federal government to avoid unnecessary hardship and distress during the COVID-19 crisis.

Labor Leader Rebecca White said the announcement of State government support for temporary visa holders is welcome but more would be required to help people through the remainder of the pandemic.

"The Premier's decision to extend eligibility for the Pandemic Isolation Assistance grants to Tasmania's 26,000 temporary visa holders is a positive step", Ms White said.

But, with only $250 available for individuals and $1000 for families, this is clearly not enough to provide ongoing support.
