Minister for Foreign Affairs, Senator the Hon Marise Payne will attend the 73rd session of the United Nations General Assembly, the largest annual gathering of world leaders and foreign ministers, in New York from 24 to 30 September.
During the week, Australia will reaffirm our contribution to global peace and security. The Minister will attend the Nelson Mandela Peace Summit, the Global Counter-Terrorism Forum, and reaffirm Australia’s support for practical and effective measures for nuclear disarmament in accordance with the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty.
Australia will also continue to pursue accountability for the downing of MH17, and justice for the victims and their loved ones.
Reinforcing Australia’s commitment to the UN’s international drug control regime, the Minister will join the US-led Global Call to Action on the World Drug Problem.
Australia will reaffirm its support for the Secretary-General’s efforts to reform the UN, and will highlight its advocacy against the death penalty globally and within the Human Rights Council.
During the week, Minister Payne will also meet with a number of her counterparts and UN representatives.
The Minister will then travel to Washington from 1 to 3 October where she will meet with United States Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to discuss our shared economic and security interests.
While in Washington, the Minister will also meet with a range of senior US officials and congressional leaders.
