Visitor Information Centre and Museum Redevelopment to proceed

VIC redevelopment - concept

On March 23 the Council approved additional funds to deliver the Benalla Visitor Information Centre and Museum Redevelopment project on the Lake Benalla foreshore.

The allocation of additional funds was required due to significant cost escalations in construction materials and labour due to the impact of COVID-19, which resulted in a funding shortfall from the original pre-pandemic costings and projections.

The total project cost is now $3million, an increase of $1 million from the original $2 million budget.

Benalla Rural City Mayor Cr Bernie Hearn said, "Unfortunately we are not immune to the rising costs of construction, which are widespread throughout the industry and impacting communities throughout Australia."

"Following significant consideration, the Council is able to provide the additional funds required due to the sound long term financial processes Benalla City Council has in place."

"Council is committed to progress this iconic project and will access savings from the existing budget to deliver the redevelopment," Cr Hearn said.

Upon completion, the new Visitor Information Centre, revitalised heritage museum, dining space and boutique cinema will have a positive impact on local tourism and economic development, and importantly will provide the local community with a place to visit and enjoy overlooking Lake Benalla.

The Benalla Visitor Information Centre and Museum Redevelopment project is scheduled to start mid-year.
