Volkanovski Keys To City Event Moves To Wollongong

Weather conditions have seen changes made to the event to present Keys to the City of Wollongong to Alexander Volkanovski today, 22 May.

Due to the inclement weather a more low-key event will take place indoors in Wollongong Central, Level 1, Gateway Building (near David Jones and Country Road), where Wollongong Lord Mayor Councillor Tania Brown will present the two-time UFC featherweight champion with the Keys to the City of Wollongong. The official proceedings remain scheduled for 6pm and still include a Q&A with the champion. The event remains open to the public, though space will be limited and subject to venue capacity.

The ceremony had been planned for the Crown Street Mall.

"I know Volk has famously said that adversity is a privilege, and the weather has tossed up its share of that in this instance," Councillor Brown said.

"While it's not the ideal scenario, it's still got nothing on what Alex has overcome in the octagon, and it won't stop us presenting him with the honour he so thoroughly deserves. It's distinction he's earned, and we don't want to a wait minute longer to hand it over.

"We also have a responsibility to ensure the safety of our community and event staff, and that just could not be guaranteed if we had gone ahead at the Crown Street Mall stage. It's based on that advice that we have made the shift, and I'm confident it will remain an event to remember."
