The Australian Government implemented the redesigned Volunteer Management Activity (VMA) model in 2021.
The VMA is a national initiative through the Australian Government's Department of Social Services that aims to create a thriving volunteering culture by supporting organisations and increasing the diversity of volunteers. Funding over 5 years (1 July 2021 to 30 June 2026) through seven state and territory Volunteering Peak Bodies (VPBs) with involvement of many community organisations, has been addressing the evolving need for sustainable volunteering practices, supported by the National Standards for Volunteer Involvement.
In 2025, an evaluation was undertaken and it is pleasing that overall, it was found that the VMA has been delivering activities aligned with its objectives. According to the report Volunteer Management Activity Evaluation | Department of Social Services , the VMA is increasing the capability and capacity of VIOs to engage, support and manage volunteers through online management tools and breaking down volunteering barriers for identified priority groups. There are always opportunities for continuous improvement and Volunteering WA is looking forward to the Department being in contact regarding potential consultation opportunities relating to the future of the program.
