Volunteer parent leads new playgroup for Horsham families

A new community playgroup has been made possible through the voluntary effort of local woman Bridget.

After arriving in Horsham a year ago, Bridget has volunteered for many community initiatives including Meals on Wheels, and is now donating her time to help connect Horsham families after the isolation of the COVID pandemic.

A mother herself, Bridget has seen a decrease in opportunities for social interaction for families as organised activities such as playgroups have struggled to re-establish after the disruption of lockdowns. By volunteering to run a new playgroup, Bridget is helping to turn this around.

This parent-led playgroup is open to any and all families in Horsham and surrounds and provides multiple benefits to the community including an opportunity for children to play with others, a chance for people to meet other parents in the community and a group for parents to talk about their parenting experiences.

Supported Playgroup Facilitator Sarah Wiesner is thrilled that Bridget is leading this new group.

"She's super bubbly and approachable, and I think will be a wonderful host, making everyone feel at home," she said.

Bridget will also be bringing her two-year-old daughter with her.

Bennett Road Community Playgroup will run through Term 1 on Thursdays from 9.30am until 11am at the Bennett Road Infant Centre (the old MCH building, in front of the kindergarten).

Families are required to bring their own snacks, with tea and coffee provided for parents. Gold coin donation on arrival covers the group's insurance with Playgroup Victoria.
