Volunteers Get Funding for 46 River Restoration Projects

  • 21 community groups funded for riverside conservation projects
  • Projects will restore habitat and waterways across Swan Canning catchments
  • Cook Government delivering in key priority to protect and restore the environment for future generations

A total of 21 community groups have been awarded almost $275,000 in grants this year to deliver 46 river restoration projects to protect and enhance the Swan Canning catchments.

The Friends of the Bennett Brook received the largest share of funding, receiving nearly $20,000 to improve biodiversity and water quality in the Bennett Brook Reserve.

The Gingin Brook Catchment Group was awarded $18,045 for a project that will support the recovery of Carnaby's Black Cockatoo Habitat in Lennard's Brook following a bushfire.

The funded projects build on 1,776 restoration projects delivered by thousands of volunteers who over the past 28 years have planted more than 3.25 million native plants, revegetated more than 3,200 hectares of land and carried out weed control across more than 8,300 hectares of land in the catchment.

These projects are made possible through a partnership between the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions, the Burswood Park Board and Alcoa of Australia, and is delivered by Perth NRM.

The 2027 round is now open for applications, with community groups encouraged to apply. For more information, visit: https://www.perthnrm.com/

As stated by the Environment Minister Matthew Swinbourn:

"Protecting the health of our iconic Swan Canning waterways remains a key priority of the Cook Labor Government and community grassroot programs play an essential role in achieving that goal.

"Congratulations to all successful recipients and thank you for the work you have done and will continue to do. I look forward to seeing the results of your projects over the coming year."
