The Minns Labor Government is delivering vital infrastructure for Wagga Wagga, today announcing the awarding of the construction contract for a major upgrade to the Sturt Highway at Marshalls Creek.
The $30 million project will improve safety and ease congestion on the highway, providing increased capacity, as well as safer and shorter journeys for the more than 20,000 vehicles that use this section of the Sturt Highway daily.
The existing bridge will be replaced with a longer, wider structure, expanding from two lanes to four and delivering improved traffic flow and connectivity on this critical transport corridor.
For Wagga Wagga, the Sturt Highway serves as a major east-west arterial route, supporting commuters, local businesses and freight movements through the city.
The highway also forms part of the critical freight corridor linking Sydney via the Hume Highway to Mildura in Victoria and Adelaide in South Australia, making this upgrade vital for both local and interstate traffic.
The construction contract has been awarded to Huon Contractors Pty Ltd, with major works scheduled to begin in August, weather permitting.
In the meantime, early works will continue in the coming weeks, including relocating electrical overhead power poles and installing new street lighting.
Transport for NSW is working closely with the contractor to ensure safe pedestrian access is maintained throughout construction, including access to the popular Wiradjuri Walking Track.
Further information will be provided to the community before major construction begins. Residents can stay informed by subscribing to updates here.
Motorists are advised to drive to conditions and follow all signage and directions from traffic controllers.
Transport for NSW thanks the community for their patience during these important works. For the latest traffic updates download the Live Traffic NSW App, visit livetraffic.com or call 132 701.

"The Minns Labor Government is delivering critical infrastructure that regional communities need and deserve. More than 20,000 cars travel this section of road every day making this an important project to improve efficiency and safety at this known pinch point.
"This project will improve traffic flow on the Sturt Highway by replacing the existing two-lane crossing, doubling the number of lanes available and removing the need to merge.
"I was pleased to work closely with the local member Dr Joe McGirr on securing this major project for his community. The Minns Government is committed to investing in regional NSW, creating jobs and improving connectivity for families and businesses across the state."
Minister for Regional NSW Tara Moriarty said:
"This $30 million investment in the Marshalls Creek Bridge demonstrates our Government's commitment to strengthening regional NSW through targeted infrastructure delivery.
"Projects like this create local jobs during construction while delivering long-term economic benefits that help regional communities thrive."
Independent Member for Wagga Wagga Dr Joe McGirr said:
"To see these much-needed improvements progress to the construction stage is exciting news for the local community and anyone who travels to the area.
"In addition to providing increased capacity on the bridge, the project will deliver a three-metre-wide shared path on the southern side and a 1.8-metre-wide footpath on the northern side to greatly improve access for pedestrians and cyclists.
"This investment by the Government demonstrates a commitment to making Wagga Wagga an even better place to live, work and visit."
