Walkers Lake still open through algal bloom

Safety signs have been installed after a suspected blue-green algae bloom was sighted in Walkers Lake yesterday.

The lake is not closed currently but council is warning visitors of the health risks associated with the algae and is in contact with GWMWater which is the local blue-green algae coordinator.

Council has also been in contact with Victorian Fisheries and all three bodies will monitor the situation at the lake.

There is currently a visual outbreak of algae across the surface of the lake and as the weather predicts hot days coming up this week, council expects the bloom will stay in place.

Council understands the bloom is only recent and has been spasmodic in the last week.

With the predicted weather forecast and as we move away from the summer heat, council is hopeful this bloom will be smaller than the recent bloom that resulted in a fishkill event.
