Man - wanted on outstanding NSW warrants - arrested in QLD over alleged vehicle theft, drug and firearm offences in the state's north.
About 9.30am on Sunday 23 October 2022, officers from the Tweed/Byron Police District attended a property on Doon Doon Road at Doon Doon – approximately 30km south of Murwillumbah - following reports of two people trespassing.
Police located a man and woman sleeping inside the premises and while speaking with the 23-year-old woman, the man allegedly ran to a nearby parked vehicle.
An officer attempted to remove the man from the vehicle when he allegedly assaulted the constable before driving a short distance and becoming bogged.
The man fled into nearby bushland and during this time, the woman also fled.
During a search of the vehicle and property, police allegedly located a firearm, ammunition and a small amount of drugs. Inquiries also established that the vehicle had been reported stolen from a Queensland address in September.
Following inquiries, the woman was arrested on a nearby property about 11.45am, after a member of the public alerted police. She was charged and has appeared in court.
Police were later informed that the man allegedly attended a neighbouring property on Doon Doon Road, and after arming himself with an axe, attempted to steal a vehicle.
The owner, a 52-year-old man, attempted to stop him driving off; however, the owner fell heavily to the road.
The armed man drove a short distance before becoming bogged, leaving the vehicle and running into nearby bushland.
The owner suffered serious leg and back injuries that required emergency surgery at Gold Coast University Hospital.
Following extensive inquiries, a 33-year-old man was arrested on Monday (31 October 2022), at Caloundra in Queensland with the assistance of Queensland Police.
Detectives attached to Tweed/Byron Police District will seek the man's extradition.
