The stunning Warrumbungle National Park Visitor Centre near Coonabarabran has been recognised at the 2020 New South Wales Architecture Awards.
The Visitor Centre picked up an Award for Sustainable Architecture and a Commendation for Public Architecture.
National Parks and Wildlife Service Regional Director Rob Smith said it was fantastic recognition on top of a Bronze in the NSW Tourism Awards last year.
"We are thrilled our brief to TKD Architects for the Warrumbungle Visitor Centre was so skilfully brought to life.
"Every day visitors to our park are amazed by the Visitor Centre which blends perfectly with its surroundings.
"Curving, stone-clad walls reflect the volcanic dykes and rock formations and the main space provides unobstructed views of iconic rock formations the 'Breadknife' and 'Belougery Spire'.
"It was particularly pleasing our efforts in creating a sustainable building have been rewarded including use of thermal mass to regulate temperature, natural ventilation throughout, a PV cell array for electricity, and water collection for toilets and irrigation.
"We also carefully planned the landscape features to ensure we used local species cultivated specifically for the project to withstand dry conditions and minimise irrigation.
"The centre replaces the former facility which was destroyed in the devastating fire of 2013.
"Recognition in the NSW Architecture Awards is a great reminder of the amazing facilities in our regional areas.
"I congratulate local staff and the community who recognised the opportunity we had to build something truly remarkable," Mr Smith said.
