The Cook Labor Government has secured another major cycling event for regional Western Australia, with the AusCycling Gravel National Championships heading to Chapman Valley in 2027 as part of Backroads Gravel.
The championships, to be held next August in Nabawa, will attract competitors and supporters from across Australia to the Chapman Valley, showcasing the Mid West's spectacular landscapes and boosting local tourism and hospitality businesses in the region.
Since launching in 2021, Backroads Gravel has grown into one of Western Australia's premier cycling events and the biggest mass participation sporting event in the Mid West.
Hosting the 2027 National Gravel Championships as part of Backroads Gravel will elevate the Mid West event to a national showcase, attracting Australia's top gravel riders and increasing interstate participation
Backroads Gravel sold out in 2026, drawing more than 1,500 participants from across the country to experience the Coral Coast's scenic backroads, unique visitor experiences and welcoming regional communities.
The championships represent a major coup for the Mid West and further strengthen Western Australia's reputation as a leading destination for cycling and sporting events.
The event is expected to deliver valuable economic benefits to the region by increasing visitation, supporting local jobs and creating opportunities for tourism operators across the Mid West.
Hosting the championships aligns with the Cook Labor Government's commitment to growing regional events that strengthen economic diversification, create and support local jobs, and deliver benefits for regional communities.
