WA's Popular Electric Vehicle Rebate Scheme Powers Down

  • Zero Emissions Vehicle rebate scheme applications close midnight 10 May 2025
  • As of 31 March 2025, 11,868 rebates paid, totalling $41,538,000
  • Over $51 million invested into the scheme by the Cook Government

Applications for the Cook Government's popular Zero Emissions Vehicle (ZEV) rebate scheme will close at midnight 10 May 2025.

The ZEV rebate scheme was announced in the 2022-23 State Budget to encourage the uptake of zero emission vehicles among Western Australian drivers by providing a $3,500 rebate to those who purchase an eligible vehicle and apply to the Department of Transport.

The scheme has proven popular, with the Cook Government investing an additional $14.7 million in 2024-25 to meet demand for the rebate, boosting the original investment from $36.5 million to $51.2 million.

As of 31 March 2025, 11,868 ZEV rebate applications have been paid, totalling $41,538,000.

The Department of Transport's licensing data has shown that the number of electric vehicles in WA increased by over 692 per cent between 31 December 2021 and 31 December 2024, with just over 25,000 zero emission vehicles now on WA roads.

The scheme was introduced as part of the Cook Government's Clean Energy Car Fund. While it has helped spark strong demand, it's the end of the road, as the market has and continues to evolve, with many more zero emission vehicles available to consumers.

More information about the ZEV rebate scheme is available on the Department of Transport website .

As stated by the Minister Assisting the Transport Minister Jessica Stojkovski:

"WA drivers planning to make the switch to an electric vehicle have until midnight 10 May 2025 to submit an application for the $3,500 rebate from the Cook Government.

"Since its inception, the ZEV rebate scheme has been extremely popular. By 31 March, 11,868 applications, totalling $41,538,000 had been paid with figures for April 2025 still be to finalised.

"Growth in the number of Western Australians purchasing electric vehicles and sustained interest in the scheme prompted the Cook Government to increase investment by $14.7 million in 2024-25 to keep up with demand."
