Townsville City Council is committed to improving its waste services, with initial works completed for the construction of the Hervey Range Front End Resource Recovery Facility.
Townsville Mayor Jenny Hill said the $6.7 million Recovery Facility will support up to 20 jobs.
"The Hervey Range Front End Resource Recovery Facility will allow locals to recycle some products they have traditionally thrown out," Cr Hill said.
"This facility will allow us to reuse a wide range of products – bikes, furniture or building supplies could be recycled.
"This will reduce landfill and supply stock for a second-hand store at the Hervey Range Transfer Station."
Townsville Water and Waste Committee Chair Cr Russ Cook said the work is another example of Council's $409.1 million investment in infrastructure.
"Council's Construction, Maintenance and Operations staff have completed the ground work to prepare the site for the construction contractor," Cr Cook said.
"Local contractor A. Gabrielli Constructions will lay the pavement and build two large sheds that will house the new resource recovery station and an on-site shop.
"The main resource recovery shed will be 41 metres by 23 metres – this is where items will be recovered for recycling, re-use or resale.
"We will have a new shop in the other shed that will sell the objects we recycle from the resource recovery shed."
The development will also include 28 car parks for customers using the shop.
Local Councillor Margie Ryder said the Hervey Range Front End Resource Recovery Facility will be a new and enhanced experience for residents.
"The facility will give people a new insight into recycling – just as importantly it will reduce landfill and cut costs," Cr Ryder said.
"We won't have to transfer as much waste from Hervey Range to Stuart Waste Facility.
"Reducing landfill is an important goal for Council and the 2019/2020 Budget has committed $16 million for waste services, including this Resource Recovery Facility."
Construction of the Hervey Range Front End Resource Recovery Facility is expected to finish in late November.
Tenders will be called for the operation of the buy-back shop.
